Public concern about the risks associated with the use and transport of hazardous materials is high, in particular the transport and storage of chlorine (Cl2) gas. As businesses look to be more competitive and less reliant on external chemical suppliers, many turn to manufacturing sodium hypochlorite on site as a safe and low-risk alternative.

GE's Cloromat® system, is safe, efficient and environmentally sound. It allows manufacturers, distributors and users of chlorine disinfectants and basic commodity chemicals to cost-effectively manufacture high-quality sodium hypochlorite (bleach) on site using only salt, water and electricity as basic raw materials. The system also has the ability to produce hydrochloric acid and caustic soda.

Since the early seventies we have designed and built plants to consistently produce high quality sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) using our electrolytic, membrane-based Cloromat® technology. GE modular Cloromat® systems are capable of producing 100 g/l to 195 g/l available chlorine NaOCl from 30,000 to 400,000 litres per day (at 125 g/l available Cl2 NaOCl).

With the addition of an optional acid synthesis burner, the Cloromat® system can also produce from 14,000 to 130,000 litres per day each of 30-36%w/w Hydrochloric Acid and 32%w/w Caustic Soda.

GE first introduced Cloromat® for the manufacture of sodium hypochlorite in 1973 and received the Chemical Process Magazine John C. Vaaler award for the Cloromat® system. Since then our Cloromat® technology has been installed and operated in more than 50 locations around the world to produce sodium hypochlorite, hydrochloric acid and caustic soda for a variety of uses including:

Disinfection of potable water and effluent
Replacement of chlorine gas disinfectants
Consumer household bleach
Consumer and industrial cleaning chemicals
Swimming pool and cooling tower treatment
Food and beverage plant cleaning and disinfection
pH Adjustment & Ion-Exchange Regeneration
